About the event
Naalbinding is a fiber looping technique that is widely seen across the continents and centuries of technological development. The earliest naalbinding piece excavated thus far was found in Israel and dates to 10,000 years ago. The technique was used extensively during the Viking era to create warm, dense garments and accessories from heavy wool fiber that would withstand long sea voyages and brutal Scandinavian winters. Often, naalbound items were virtually waterproof. The art is alive and well in Scandinavia and Northern Europe today, and there are artists worldwide who are passionate about preserving this fascinating and little-known ancient technique.
If you are looking for a new challenge, naalbinding may open a whole new world of creativity for you.
Materials covered will include a brief history; yarn and needle choices; yarn joining; starting and ending; step-by-step guided instructions for mastering the Oslo stitch; on-line resources; and more.
Materials Fee = $15. Â Practice yarn, textual and illustrated instructions, and a beautiful handmade naalbinding needle are included.
